Let’s Hear it For Hoigaard’s!

“Everyone should live in California, but leave before they get soft.  Everyone should live in Manhattan, but leave before they get hard.”

I’ve got nothing against Manhattan:  I’ve lived there, got married there, and enjoy visiting family and friends there.

But, I’d rather live (and raise my kids) in the Twin Cities, for a host of reasons, starting with Midwestern values.

Exhibit A

A terrific example of that would be my experience at local retailer Hoigaard’s last week, right after Christmas.

Not wanting to spend money replacing a zipper, I went in looking for a new winter coat (hopefully, on sale!).

When I told that to the salesperson, he said that my old coat came with a lifetime zipper warranty, and that I should send it back to the manufacturer.

Then, studying the coat more closely, he said, “I think I know what’s wrong.”

He took the coat in back, did I don’t know what to the zipper . . . and fixed it!

Total cost to me: $0.

My quintessential New York City experience? (which has happened many times).

I pay for a $10 meal at a diner with a $20, and the waiter asks me if I want any change back . . .

P.S.:  There’s a saying that you should “never ask a barber if you need a haircut.”  Clearly, that’s not Hoigaard’s policy — or that of many, many other local salespeople I know (including this Realtor).   🙂
