Mining Taboos (Abortion, Suicide, etc.) for Laughs. Really.

Maybe Louis C.K. is saving incest, bestiality, and genocide for his next stand-up special.

In this one, titled merely “2017” (it’s a riff on Christianity), he contents himself tackling such taboo subjects as abortion, suicide, beheading, transexuality, and latent homosexuality (if you hadn’t noticed, sex and sexuality loom large in his routines).

Downer, right?

Hardly.

Louis C.K. is as hilarious (and outrageous) as ever, mining each of these topics for their absurdities and contradictions.

Tackling Trump: Too Soon?

Conspicuously absent from Louis C.K.’s new routine?

Any direct mention of Donald Trump.

The New York Times observes:

“No heavyweight political comics have really gone all in on the president.  Then again, since material for a stand-up special can take years to put together, this may be a bit early.”

–“He Looks at Life: Both Sides Now”; The New York Times (4/4/2017).

Personally, after the last few months, I was grateful for the respite (if you can call a routine about abortion, suicide, etc. a “respite”) . . .
