Something in the Zeitgeist?
[Editor’s note: thanks to 15 year-old Boston reader Xadine for pointing out that what I’d referred to as a “bob” is actually known as a “pixie.” I couldn’t think of a headline that went with “P,” so I left that part alone.]
OK, women’s hairstyle trends may not be the takeaway that the makers of “Insurgent” — installment #2 in the “Divergent” series — wanted the movie audience to leave with.
But, a pixie ‘do is a striking feature of newly-tough heroine Tris Prior, played by Shailene Woodley (pictured above).
Added to the pixies sported by Robin Wright’s character, Claire Underwood in “House of Cards (photo #2), and by Penny, Kaley Cuocco’s character in “Big Bang Theory” this season (photo, below), and you have the makings of an undeniable trend.
Aspiring to Power
What’s that about?
I really don’t know.
But, I’d speculate that if long hair is associated with beauty and sex appeal, short hair is supposed to convey austere seriousness and determination, and a sense of powerfulness.
At least for women, especially ones who also happen to be blonde.
Call it the “anti-Samson” effect.
P.S.: the reviews knocking “Insurgent” are wrong; it’s very well-done, with scene-stealing turns by Octavia Spencer and Miles Teller.
