Quick! Name Your Kid’s 3 Best Friends
“80% of success in life is showing up.”
First, give credit where credit’s due: I got the idea from the terrific FX series, “The Americans” (I just discovered the 3 year-old show, and am on a tear watching old episodes).
In the (very) poignant scene, a lonely, resentful “work widow” tells her husband she misses the days when he was more involved in family life, and “knew the names of their kids’ three best friends.”
Whoever wrote that must have been a parent — and, I’m betting, a good one.
You may not be the world’s greatest parent, but, if you know the names of your kids’ three best friends, you’re certainly an involved one.
To paraphrase that maybe-not-so-good parent, Woody Allen, being involved in your kids’ lives — i.e., “showing up” — is (at least) 80% of successful parenting.
