Explanations and Silver Linings (or Not) for Defeated Democrats
At least some Democrats seeking solace in the wake of Tuesday’s blowout Republican win are pointing to gerrymandered Congressional districts as the explanation.
Exhibit A: liberal Austin, Texas, which is represented in Congress by no less than four Republicans — each of whom represents a district where a relatively small Austin slice is diluted by the much bigger, conservative bloc it’s combined with.
St. Louis’ democratic votes were also divvied up this way — at least until the state lost a Congressional seat after the last census.
Electoral Strategy: Divide Dilute and Conquer
Still, there are limits to the gerrymandering theory.
Such as, if gerrymandering were the entire explanation, why do Republicans now hold 31 Governor’s mansions?
Food for thought, especially for dismayed Democrats . . .
