Overshadowed Sibling(s) No More

You know a place is becoming (too) trendy when it becomes a cultural shorthand for hot locales threatening to eclipse their bigger, better-known neighbors.

brooklynSo, at least according to some accounts, Oakland is now the “Brooklyn of the Bay Area.”  See, “Oakland:  Brooklyn by the Bay.

Similarly, places like Westhampton and Remsenburg (huh?) on Long Island are being billed as the “Brooklyn of the Hamptons.”  See, “The Hamptons-in-Waiting.”

I suppose it’s only a matter of time before someone refers to St. Petersburg, FL as the “Brooklyn of Tampa Bay” and (surprisingly arty) Fort Worth, Texas as the “Brooklyn of the Dallas area.”

Which just leaves me one question:  is Brooklyn the “St. Paul of New York City?”  🙂

P.S.: As someone who, once upon a time, spent exactly one summer in the (trendier) East Hampton’s — trust me, you don’t want to share a house with 30 people for a weekend, no matter how big it is (the fancy name for that is a “timeshare”).
