I’ve seen plenty of A/C compressors in attics.
What’s not so common is seeing one mounted outside a 2nd floor window.
What’s going on?
Without knowing specifics, you can surmise a couple things:
–It’s an older home — in this case, a 1928 Tudor — that was built without central a/c.
–The original heating system was hot water (heated by a boiler), which isn’t readily converted to central a/c because there’s no preexisting duct work as there is for forced air heating.
–Locating the a/c compressor in the attic wasn’t an option, either because of space, wiring, ventilation or ???.
Note that not only is the a/c compressor located on the 2nd floor, it’s next to the home’s main electric hook-up, which minimizes re-wiring.
All of which begs the question, why put an a/c unit on a 2nd floor or attic at all?
Because (heavier) cold air falls, ensuring that the home is efficiently cooled.
