Heat Wave, A/C Glitches Overwhelm Home Warranty Phone Lines

If you’re a homeowner whose central a/c is on the fritz, and are covered by a warranty policy, before you pick up the phone to report a claim today, you may want to get a cup of coffee and something to read.

How come?

The phone lines — at least at one big insurer — have been swamped.

I know, because I just called (to verify coverage on a home that closes this afternoon), and spent 20-plus minutes on hold.

Once I got through, the explanation I received was that the national heat wave is causing unprecedented a/c failures, which in turn is swamping their phone center(s).

P.S.:  My 2¢:  if you warrant central a/c, and there’s a heat wave over a holiday weekend  . . . it’s your job to make sure your phone centers are sufficently staffed that customers get prompt service.
