What’s the Catch?

“Earn 5% Cashback Bonus when you shop at Rainbow Foods with Discover.”

–Credit card promotion

Five percent back sounds awfully good, especially when most credit cards are only offering 1% or 2% these days.

So, what’s the catch?

How about four of them?

Catch #1:  the purchases have to be at Rainbow — no big deal if you already shop there.

Catch #2:  you have to sign up for the program.

OK, so maybe it’s fast (maybe), and not rolled up with some cockamamie survey you need to complete first.

Catch #3:  the promotion is only good for May.

OK, so maybe you have a big family, and actually spend $300 a month on groceries (see next).

But catch #4 — buried in the fine print (natch) — is the real kicker:  the 5% back is subject to a cap of $300 in purchases.

Let’s see . . .  5% times $300 equals . . . $15.

Yup, a measly $15 for all that.

Somehow, I don’t think a postcard that blared “Jump through lots of hoops to save $15” would get much of a response.

P.S.:  Sorry, make that “Save up to $15.”
