Aftermath of 2″ Rain Friday Night

If you didn’t get water in your basement after early Saturday morning’s 2 inch deluge in much of the Twin Cities — you’re probably immune.

Unfortunately, I ‘m getting lots of reports that many homeowners weren’t so lucky.

That includes the home I showed in Edina yesterday, where yours truly discovered the “splish-splosh” of soaked carpet as my clients and I checked out the basement (let’s hear it for bare feet!).

“Splish-Splosh”

The culprit?

Clogged gutters that were overrun by the downpour, allowing water to cascade over the top and pool next to the house.

Other common reasons for wet basements:  missing gutter extensions, and negative grade (towards the house instead of away).

Fortunately, all of the above can be fixed (or prevented) inexpensively.

P.S.:  And yes, affected homeowners whose houses are currently on the market should update their disclosures to inform prospective Buyers — who are going to see (and smell) the aftereffects, anyways.
