WSJ:  $25 Billion Just in U.S.

Almost a year and a half ago, I speculated that’s Volkswagen’s liability stemming from its emissions cheating scandal was likely to be far above consensus estimates at the time.  See, “Calculating VW’s Financial & Legal Hit From Emissions Scandal.”

My ballpark estimate:  $35 billion.

So, how close did I come?

Actually, my number was too conservative.

According to today’s Wall Street Journal:

“Volkswagen is on the hook for $25 billion in the U.S. due to its emission cheating scandal, depending on the mix of vehicle buybacks and repairs.”

–“Volkswagen Faces Up to Penalties”; The Wall Street Journal (3/11-3/12/2017).

Of course, that’s just in the U.S.

To come up with Volkswagen’s total liability, globally, you’d guess something like 2x that, or $50 billion.
