Lobby Facelift, Without Breaking the Bank

One of the biggest trends in residential real estate the last few years are “tray ceilings”:  basically, an indented or recessed shape in the ceiling — often a pentagon or hexagon — framed by decorative molding(s).

I’ve seen them in Living Rooms, Dining Rooms, Master Bedrooms — indeed, practically every room except the bathroom (maybe the bathrooms in Versailles have them??).

New Construction vs. Retrofit

Of course, it’s one thing to incorporate tray ceilings into new construction, but quite another to retrofit an existing home with them.

Or the lobby of a Minneapolis condo building that I just showed clients.

To give the lobby a fresher, more updated look, the management company installed what I’ll call “faux” tray ceilings (photo below), basically consisting of moldings suspended from the ceiling.

Does it work?

You be the judge.
