Where is the Twin Cities’ best people-watching spot?

You’d normally answer “the Lakes,” assuming the temperature is above zero.

But at least the next week or so, the Twin Cities’ best people-watching location is very likely the downtown Minneapolis Whole Foods, which just opened this Wednesday.

Located smack in the middle of downtown’s burgeoning housing scene, the store was full of curious Yuppie-types — plus a certain suburban Dad with two kids — when I was there Thursday evening, en route to the Twins games (if you don’t live in the neighborhood, the underground parking is free, plentiful — and a snap to access, on the west side).

Best Twin Cities Dog-Watching

Any of the Twin Cities’ dozens of off-leash dog areas is a safe choice.  See, “Minneapolis:  Home to the World’s Best Dog Parks“; “Watch Dog.”

wayzataMy personal favorite:  Minnehaha, just southwest of the Falls, with its own private half-mile(?) of Mississippi riverfront.

Of course, if your tastes run to the more urban, it’s hard to beat downtown Wayzata, which combines terrific views of Lake Minnetonka with lots of interesting storefronts on Lake Street (I was there this am, cooling my heels while one of my kids was at a birthday party at the Lake St. Ben & Jerry’s).

P.S.:  I proposed walking around Whole Foods — the one by Lake Calhoun — after grabbing a bite nearby with my daughter yesterday.

Noting the chill and drizzling rain, she replied “why would we want to do that?!?”

I had to clarify that I meant “inside.”
