I suppose whether or not today’s TV and cable series are remembered as TV’s Golden Era (or at least a Golden Era) depends on what comes next.

tvtop10But, one can make the case — and I would — that nearly one-half of the greatest TV shows ever are, remarkably, currently on the air.

That includes “young” series such as “House of Cards” and “Ray Donovan,” just beginning their runs, as well as venerable veterans such as “The Simpsons”, “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad,” now concluding its six-year run (or resuming its interrupted 5th season, depending on how you’re counting).

What else belongs on the all-time “Ten Best” list?

My candidates include:

–“The Sopranos”
–“Seinfeld”
–“M*A*S*H”
–“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”
–“Cheers”
–“Modern Family” (active)
–“Louis CK” (active)
–“The Waltons”
–“Happy Days”
–“All in the Family”
–“The Simpsons” (active)
–“I Love Lucy”
–“Sex and the City”
–“30 Rock” (just concluded)

Scratch that, make it a “Top 20” List.

*The term applied to the 1927 Yankees, featuring Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and a grand total of six future Hall of Famers.
