Walk´- out“:  when a home is built on a slight hill sloping away from the front, making the lower level above grade.

Walkout basements are something I associate with the Midwest, not the Southwest; for one thing, homes in the Southwest usually don’t have basements.

However, that doesn’t mean Phoenix doesn’t have properties with that design.

In fact, several of the resorts seem to favor a “U” or even an “H” layout, with a circular driveway in front, and a lower level that walks out in back to a pool, lounge or restaurant (or all three).

I grabbed lunch at two such resorts — much cheaper than staying there! — while visiting relatives in the area over Thanksgiving.
