Adolescent ( and Adult) Trivial Pursuits

If you were a kid long enough ago, you remember the game of looking for — and occasionally finding — change at the bottom of a pay phone (remember those?).

payphoneThat was an especially popular way to kill a little time at an airport, museum, or virtually any other public place you were stuck with your parents in tow (or was it the other way around?).

Fumbled “Change Exchange”

Ubiquitous cellphones have long since ended that adolescent trivial pursuit.

But it has been succeeded by another, albeit more adult version.

Driving through a Starbucks the other morning, the attendant (cashier?  barista?) and I fumbled the “change exchange,” and a couple coins dropped on the ground.

When I opened my car door to pick them up . . . I discovered the previous several customers who had their change dropped hadn’t bothered.

My “haul?”

Enough to easily pay for another Starbucks coffee.
