Wet Suits Optional

What’s so remarkable about sailing, at sunset, on Lake Bde Maka Ska? (formerly Lake Calhoun).

Several things, actually:

–Time of year: the shot above was taken in December (yesterday, in fact).

–Time of day: sunset in late June in Minneapolis is past 9 p.m. Now, it’s about 4:30 p.m.

–Temps: Notwithstanding the mild, 40° degree weather, that band of especially smooth water behind the sail boat is a thin sheet of ice.

–Although you can’t tell from the photo, this time of year the sun sets over the far southwestern corner of the lake. In June, it sets over the far northeastern corner.

Suffice to say, after 9″ of snow well before Halloween this year, a mild early December (at least so far) is a welcome reprieve . . .
