More People Living — & Working — by the Lakes? “You Betcha!”

Once upon a time, on an especially nice weekday in Spring or Summer, the traffic heading east to Lake Calhoun would back up a couple blocks during rush hour.

No more.

Now, it’s practically year-round, both directions — at least any time the windchill is positive (the snapshot above was taken yesterday).

New Uptown Rentals

What gives?

I attribute it to all the new rental housing that’s been built Uptown the last few years — especially on either side of the Midtown Greenway, between roughly Hennepin Ave. and Grand Ave.

During morning rush hour, all those Millennials (Gen X’ers??) head to their “new economy” jobs in Edina, Eden Prairie, and Minnetonka office parks.

At night . . . they come home.

For long-time neighborhood denizens like myself, it all sort of recalls Yogi Berra’s line about an especially popular South Florida restaurant:  “nobody goes there anymore . . . it’s too crowded.”
