Substitute “Procrastinator” for “Dreamer”

“You may say I’m a dreamer,
But I’m not the only one.”

–lyrics, “Imagine”; John Lennon

OK, so I certainly meant to finish off all my continuing ed requirements well before the May 31 deadline.*

Just like I did the year before (and the one before that, ad nauseam).

deadlineBut, look at the following course schedule — for a new requirement this year, titled “Contracts and Minnesota Distressed Properties” — and tell me I’m the only Realtor procrastinator out there:

May 17, 18, 20, 23, 28, 30

June 1, 3, 5, 7, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 22, 24, 26, 27

Nah, I didn’t think so.

And that’s just for one vendor, Kaplan (no relation) — never mind the other 8-10 continuing ed outfits out there.

19(!) Classes in 5 Weeks

In my defense, late Spring is a terrible time to set a deadline for anything Realtor-related.

That’s because this time of year is the very peak of a very seasonal business.

Minnesota property tax collectors grasped this principle long ago, when they levied property taxes twice a year, on May 15 and October 15.

Their logic?

Once upon a time, when the state’s economy was agrarian, the two times a year farmers were likeliest to have money were before they planted in the Spring (May 15), and after they harvested in the Fall (October 15).

So, how about it, Department of Commerce?

Let’s hear it for an off-peak deadline for real estate continuing ed — like, November 30 or January 31.

*Bigger brokers like Edina Realty require agents to turn in their paperwork one month before the official, June 30 state deadline.
