“East is East, and West is West . . .”
It’s well-known that mnemonics — using associations to aid memory — are useful for recalling people’s names.
But mnemonics are also a great way to keep street names straight.
So, in Minneapolis, I remember that Park Ave. is a one way running east by thinking of Manhattan’s Park Avenue.
Portland Avenue, which runs parallel to Park Ave. the opposite direction, points westward towards Portland, Oregon (kind of).
Now, I just have to come up with a way to remember that odd-numbered addresses are on the east side of (most) Twin Cities streets, and even-numbered addresses are on the west side.
