Ten Mile Traffic Jam in the Desert, or,
Trump Holds Rally in Fountain Hills, AZ

[Editor’s Note:  does writing about Donald Trump boost traffic?  We’ll see . . .   🙂 ]

Finishing a brief trip to AZ (feel better, Mom!), I headed from my parents’ place in Scottsdale to Fountain Hills yesterday morning for my favorite hike.

trafficOr tried to.

More than 10 miles west of the town, I hit a wall of stopped cars.

“We Love You Donald!/We Hate You Donald!”

It turns out Donald Trump was holding an 11 a.m. rally in the city center, ahead of Arizona’s winner-take-all primary this Tuesday.

The event not only shut down traffic for miles in every direction**, but filled the sky with helicopters and small planes trailing banners (I was too far away to read them; I’m gonna guess they were variants of either “We Love You, Donald!” or “We Hate You, Donald!”).

According to the local papers, Trump chose Fountain Hills for the event because it’s the hometown of notorious Maricopa County Sheriff (and Trump supporter) Joe Arpaio.

Police?  Or Para-Military?

Before I turned around, I saw in my rearview mirror what appeared to be an undercover police car with its lights flashing racing toward the event.

Me and all the other cars moved to the right, to let it pass.

As I saw it go by, it sure didn’t look like police officers in the SUV, nor did the flashing lights look quite like any other emergency vehicle’s I’d ever seen.

Best guess:  it was private security for the event trying to look like an official vehicle.  Can you say, “para-military?” Uggh . . .

**According to at least some news accounts, the massive traffic jam was caused by protesters.
