Curb Appeal Two-for-One
It’s hard to improve a home’s curb appeal.
But not impossible.
In general, there are three strategies:
One. Addition.
Strategic landscaping — specifically, adding shrubs and evergreens — can be a very effective way to frame a home and make it look bigger and more impressive.
Variation #2: adding shutters, more neutral exterior paint, or just painting the trim a complementary “accent” color.
Two. Subtraction.
Even simpler than adding landscaping is removing it, especially if it’s so overgrown that it’s obscuring much of the home’s front (tackling the back is a much lower priority).
Three. Both subtraction and addition.
Exhibit A: the owner of this Fern Hill 1 1/2 story first removed an especially dated feature — the awning over the front door (top picture).
Then, they replaced it with a portico (photo #2).
Call it a “two-for-one” improvement.
P.S.: You’d guess that the portico will be painted once warmer weather arrives.
And the reason just removing awnings (“subtraction”) isn’t an option is that they leave ugly holes in the siding (or stucco) that can be hard to fill/patch.
