What makes I.M Pei’s pyramid in the Louvre Courtyard an instant classic?

At the other extreme, why is the 2003 renovation to Chicago’s Soldier Field — adding Contemporary luxury boxes to the Greco-Roman stadium — widely regarded to be an architectural fiasco?

Style Hits & Misses

But I think most people would agree that adding a spiral staircase to a 1920’s bungalow — especially when it’s located in a corner of the Dining Room (left side of photo above) — is a style blunder.

Perhaps that’s why the “Agent Remarks” offers that “the spiral stairs could be removed.”

P.S.:  spiral staircases in Contemporary homes work just fine.

I’ve also seen them resorted to when there’s not enough space for a regular staircase — or the existing staircase has exceedingly steep risers and/or shallow steps (the case above).
